Shanghai to raise sea burial subsidy
China National News (IANS) Friday 3rd February, 2012
The Shanghai government is planning to increase the subsidy offered for sea burials to help preserve its limited land resources.
The city began subsidising sea burials in 2003. People who attend a sea burial ceremony are charged for transportation and other services, the China Daily reported Friday.
Shanghai also put forward a pilot scheme last year that allows childless old people to opt for a sea burial service after death.
Starting this year, the service will be available for those whose children are unable to afford a burial service.
