CALIFORNIA, U.S. - A large ransomware attack affected the San Diego Port, disrupting administration systems.
In a statement, the San Diego port operator acknowledged that it had been hit by a ransomware attack, explaining that the malware had infiltrated its computer network.
The port operator clarified that the cyberattack had disrupting administration systems but said that it did not stop ships or boats using the port.
Further, it assured that members of the public were not in danger and that the company felt a major impact on the issuing of park permits, public records requests and general business services.
The port operator further noted that it had launched an investigation into the issue and that the Department of Homeland Security, along with the FBI were help it probe the attack and clean up.
In an official statement, Randa Coniglio, CEO of the Port said, "This is mainly an administrative issue and normal Port operations are continuing as usual."
According to the Port, a part of the disruption was caused by its staff shutting down computers as the ransomware began to spread, over dangers of being compromised.
Further, the Port operator has revealed that the the attackers were demanding payment in Bitcoins.
So far however, it has not revealed the type of malware used.
