HARBIN, May 23 (Xinhua) -- Trails of wild Siberian tigers have been frequently found recently in China's National Park for Siberian Tigers and Amur Leopards in Heilongjiang Province, local authorities said on Saturday.
From May 14 to 18, footprints and crouching traces of wild Siberian tigers were found three times in a forest area in the national park.
Jiang Guangshun, executive deputy director of the Feline Research Center of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, identified these footprints as being from the same adult male Siberian tiger.
The forested area where traces of wild Siberian tigers were found was included in the national park as a pilot project in 2017. Over the past three years, local conservationists have excelled at daily patrols and protection, setting up field feeding sites and monitoring the number of wild animals. They also ensure an environment conducive to encouraging the reproduction and diffusion of wild Siberian tiger populations.
Jiang said the frequent discoveries of the footprints of these tigers indicate that the pilot protection work has borne fruit. As the forest area is located in the far west of the national park, it shows that the wild Siberian tiger population in the park is spreading outward, according to Jiang.
