Siphiwe Tshabalala says he agreed to join AmaZulu after hearing the club's plans for the new season.
The former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana star was reportedly in talks to join a club in China prior to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.
He was still hopeful of securing a move before being unveiled along with a host of new signings by Usuthu this week.
Tshabalala last played for Turkish side BB Erzurumspor after leaving Amakhosi following a decade with the Premiership club.
He was reported by the Phakaaati as saying: "I would like to thank the president, Sandile Zungu. I had meetings with him, and he told me the plans he has for the team and that's why I came here.
"It's a new chapter for me and I hope I will be able to help the team - both on and off the field.
"I have been working really hard, obviously doing individual training to make sure that I am in good physical condition."
Tshabalala, who was also reportedly being chased by newly promoted Swallows FC, added: "We start against Pirates and then three days later there is another game, so it is going to be a tough season and I definitely think the guys are up to it."
