WASHINGTON -- U.S. President-elect Joe Biden on Monday received the second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, four weeks after he was administered the first shot.
Biden was injected the second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine at a hospital in Newark, Delaware, his home state where his transition headquarters is based. He received the first dose on Dec. 21.

LISBON -- Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa tested positive for COVID-19, said a statement posted on the official website of the Portuguese Presidency on Monday night.
Rebelo de Sousa had "tested negative yesterday, and although today's antigen test is negative, it was now known, at 9:40 p.m., that the PCR test was positive," the statement said, referring to the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test.

MADRID -- Spain's Ministry of Health said Monday that 61,422 new cases and 401 deaths from COVID-19 have been confirmed for the 72-hour period from 2 p.m. on last Friday until 2 p.m. on Monday.
The new cases mean that the incidence of cases of the coronavirus has risen sharply to 435.6 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Spain has now confirmed a total of 2,111,782 cases and 52,275 deaths from the disease since the start of the pandemic.

JERUSALEM -- The number of coronavirus cases in Israel surpassed half a million, Israel's Ministry of Health said Monday night.
According to the ministry, since the previous update on Monday evening, 1,711 new COVID-19 cases have been added, bringing the total to 501,073.

PRETORIA -- South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on Monday announced the closure of 20 land ports of entry until Feb. 15 to combat the spread of COVID-19.
Ramaphosa made the announcement while addressing the nation about the developments in relation to the country's response to COVID-19.

TAIPEI -- The total number of COVID-19 cases in Taiwan has grown to 834 as of Monday, the island's epidemic monitoring agency said.
The island reported six new COVID-19 cases Monday, including three from Egypt, one each from the Philippines and Indonesia, and one local resident returning from a trip to the United States, the agency said.
