GENEVA -- The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on Thursday announced that Mirjana Spoljaric Egger of Switzerland has been elected as its next president.
In a statement, ICRC said that Spoljaric Egger, to begin her renewable four-year term as ICRC president on Oct. 1 of 2022, will succeed President Peter Maurer, who has decided to step down in September 2022 after he reaches 10 years of service. (ICRC-New-President)

COLOMBO -- Fourteen people were killed and one person missing after strong winds and heavy rains lashed out across Sri Lanka since last week, the Disaster Management Center (DMC) has said.
According to the latest figures from the DMC, over 100,000 families had been affected in the nine districts due to adverse weather conditions while 114 people had been relocated to safe locations and 22 people had been injured. (Sri Lanka-Rains)

VIENNA -- The Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Wednesday set up a new agenda item on AUKUS to address the grave concerns of the international community.
Wang Qun, Chinese envoy to the United Nations and other international organizations in Vienna, said on Wednesday that at China's suggestion the Board decided "by consensus and on short notice" on a new agenda item on the "Transfer of nuclear materials in the context of AUKUS and its safeguards in all aspects under the NPT (Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons)." CAIRO -- Egypt's Court of Cassation, the country's top appeals court, on Thursday upheld a previous court ruling that sentenced 21 "terrorists" to death over charges of killing policemen, official news agency MENA reported.
They were convicted of killing 42 security men, 15 civilians and wounding more than 340 others in 54 terrorist attacks. (Egypt-Killing Policemen-Death Sentence)
