LUSAKA, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- Zambia's participation in two regional Kungfu competitions will inspire many young people in the country to take up the Chinese martial arts, the athletes' body said on Friday.
The Zambia Wushu Kungfu Federation has been invited by the Red Dragon Shaolin Kungfu of Botswana to participate in a competition to be held from October 28 to 30, and by the Congo Kungfu Federation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to take part in a competition to be held in May next year.
In a statement, the federation said the competitions will not only inspire new athletes but also inspire current students to put in extra efforts to advance their skills so that they could start competing in international competitions.
The statement added that the Chinese culture is significant because it influences every facet of a Chinese person's life, adding that understanding the Chinese culture and how it affects society is crucial.
"We accepted invitations from the DRC and Botswana because of the importance of their subjects, and we anticipate that the chosen contestants would gain knowledge from the competition and bring home the trophy for Zambia," the statement said.
The federation intends to send six athletes for the competition in Botswana and has organized a local tournament to select participants.
Organized by Gwesani Pansi Kungfu Club in collaboration with the Zambia Wushu Kungfu Federation, the "Kungfu Fight Night" will be held on August 30.
