MOMBASA, Kenya, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta on Thursday commissioned the Chinese-built Kipevu Oil Terminal at the port of Mombasa.
Built by the China Communications Construction Company, the 770-meter-long jetty with the capacity to load and offload all categories of petroleum products from very large sea tankers of up to 200,000 deadweight tonnes (dwt) is the largest of its kind in Africa.
The jetty was developed as part of sustained government efforts to lower fuel pump prices in the country by saving over 16.8 million U.S. dollars incurred annually in demurrage costs.
During an inspection in January, President Kenyatta said the oil terminal will enhance the supply and cost stability of petroleum products in Kenya and the region.
