New Delhi has removed most restrictions for short-term visitors from China
India has fast-tracked business visas for Chinese professionals as New Delhi continues to boost ties with Beijing, Reuters reported on Friday.
The Indian government has dropped a layer of bureaucratic scrutiny and shortened visa approval times to less than a month, the news agency said, citing two unidentified officials.
"We have removed the layer of administrative vetting and are processing the business visas within four weeks," one of the officials told the news agency.
A border clash in June 2020 strained relations between the two nations, resulting in a more strenuous vetting of business visas to Chinese citizens.
Many Chinese companies, including smartphone maker Xiaomi, struggled to get visas for their employees, according to multiple media reports.
Increased visa scrutiny for support specialists has also led to production losses worth $15 billion over four years, according to Reuters, as many Indian electronics makers import key machinery from China.
In July 2025, India resumed issuing tourist visas to Chinese citizens after a five-year pause. A month later, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited China for the first time since 2018, where he met President Xi Jinping at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit.
"Our relationship has taken a positive direction. There is peace and stability on the borders," Modi remarked at the time.
Earlier this month, Beijing said that China, Russia, and India are emerging economies and key members of the Global South, making their engagement crucial for the world.
In October, India and China resumed direct flights after a five-year hiatus. Air travel between the nations had been suspended at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
