BRUSSELS, Belgium: European governments are weighing a sweeping trade response to pressure from Washington over Greenland, as tensions escalate ahead of high-level talks with U.S. President Donald Trump, the Financial Times reported on January 18.
According to the report, European capitals are considering retaliatory measures that could include tariffs on U.S. goods worth 93 billion euros (US$107.71 billion) or restrictions on American companies' access to the European market. The plans are aimed at countering Trump's threats toward NATO allies that have opposed his campaign to take over Greenland.
The proposed measures are being prepared to strengthen Europe's negotiating position ahead of meetings between EU leaders and Trump at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, the report said.
