Cutter Gauthier broke a tie with 1:14 to play and Ducks coach Joel Quenneville became the second bench boss in NHL history to win 1,000 games as host Anaheim claimed a wild 6-5 comeback victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday.
Leo Carlsson scored once in a three-point outing to pace the Ducks to a third consecutive victory, moving them past Edmonton and into second place in the Pacific Division.
Ian Moore, Alex Killorn, Owen Zellweger and Beckett Sennecke also scored for the Ducks, who have 10 of 12 games. Anaheim goaltender Lukas Dostal made 22 saves.
Quenneville joins Scotty Bowman (1,244 victories) as the only members of the 1,000-win club.
With overtime looming, Gauthier was on the spot to bury his second attempt and cap an Anaheim victory after the Duck erased three deficits and scored four times in the final frame.
Matt Savoie scored once in a three-point game for the Oilers, who have lost four straight games. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Evan Bouchard both collected one goal and one assist, and Jack Roslovic and Zach Hyman added a goal apiece.
Starting goalie Tristan Jarry was pulled after surrendering five goals on 24 shots. Connor Ingram took the loss after allowing one goal on four shots.
Both teams were playing their first game after the NHL's three-week Olympic break.
Three times the Oilers staked leads -- including a pair of two-goal edges -- and every time the Ducks pulled even.
Roslovic opened the scoring on the game's first shot 13 seconds into the clash by converting a partial breakaway with a shot from his off wing.
Nugent-Hopkins made it a 2-0 game at 9:03 of the first when he chipped home a close-in chance set up by Connor McDavid.
Moore put the Ducks on the board 87 seconds later by one-timing a shot from the top of the right circle, and then Killorn made it a 2-2 game at 3:01 of the second period by pouncing on a rebound during a power play.
Hyman put Edmonton ahead at 18:45 of the second period by neatly redirecting a cross-ice feed. Bouchard made it a 4-2 game 35 seconds later when he pinched in from his point position and buried a chance.
However, the Ducks erased that deficit with a pair of early third-period goals. Carlsson, who returned after missing 11 games due to injury, buried a rebound 90 seconds into the period, and Zellweger tied the clash 85 seconds later with a deflection goal.
Savoie put the Oilers ahead again by finding the handle on a loose puck at 5:53 of the period on a power play.
Sennecke tied the game again 46 seconds later with a shot from the slot that spelled the end of the night for Jarry.
