London [UK], April 14 (ANI): England skipper Ben Stokes has broken his silence on the alleged rift with head coach Brendon McCullum, calling it a 'massive overstatement', adding that he is 'very confident' in their ability to work together.
After the review carried by England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) following the 1-4 Ashes loss in Australia, skipper Ben Stokes, coach Brendon McCullum and managing director Rob Key retained their posts. Stokes has not played in the early rounds of the ongoing County Championship for Durham due to a cheekbone injury while training, and had not spoken to the media since the final day of the fifth Ashes Test at Sydney in January.
After the confirmation came that the trio had retained their jobs, Stokes posted an expletive-filled message to England fans expressing his love and commitment for English cricket and the team, and now has, for the first time, used ECB's in-house media to speak on his relationship with McCullum, as England gear up for their Test summer against New Zealand from June onwards.
'When you are in a position of leadership along with someone else, if anyone thinks that you are always going to agree on everything, then it is just impossible,' Stokes told the ECB's website as quoted by ESPNCricinfo.
'To me, that just is not a healthy environment for sport, in particular, where everyone just agrees with everyone or says yes to the person up there. You need debate. You need... not arguments, but you need discussions. Then you end up getting to the place you both want to end up getting to,' he added.
Further speaking on the importance of debates in a team environment, Stokes said that while he and Brendon are similar in many area, 'they are also dissimilar in other areas as well'.
'But the thing we both want is to be as successful as we possibly can. How we get to being successful might be the same here, but slightly differs here - but we will always be able to end up in the same place by having these discussions,' he said.
He said that he and McCullum agree on things 95 per cent of time, but they always manage to get to a common point when they disagree and said that the reports of the duo not being 'aligned' is a massive overstatement.
'We agree 95 per cent of the time on things, but those 5 per cent things that we might have different views on, we talk about it between each other, and then we end up getting to the place where we both feel that we want to get to. Agreeing on every single thing, that is just impossible. Saying that we weren't aligned, I think, is a massive overstatement,' he added.
Stokes' central contract is till end of 2027 home summer, and there is still a chance to beat Australia at home for the first time in 12 years. Stokes hopes to stay as a captain with coach McCullum, though he hinted that a 'slightly different' direction could be taken in the next 18 months.
'With what me and Brendon were able to achieve with the group over a four-year period, I just couldn't imagine doing what we were trying to do with anyone else,' Stokes said.
'We are both very proud men in what we do. We put a lot of our heart and soul into this job. Brendon certainly has for the four years he has done it so far, and hopefully, we will still be together at the end of 2027, winning what we want to win. I am very confident in mine and Brendon's ability to be able to work together - because we have done it for such a long period of time now - but work together in a slightly different way,' he added.
Stokes said that the main thing that aligns them is 'winning things and making the team as good as they could be'.
'That has always been the thing since we started. It might just look a little bit different now to how that operates, on the back of four years working together. But we still want to win everything, and we still want to give the guys the best chance that they possibly can of being as good as they can be,' he said. (ANI)
